“If Web 1.0 was a read-only medium, Web 2.0 is a read/write medium. The Internet’s first mass market stage of development saw users going to the Internet to find information. It was pretty much a one way experience… In contrast, Web 2.0 relies on user participation… The term Web 2.0 refers to a “Second generation of services available on the World Wide Web that lets people collaborate and share information online” (Thompson 1).




What is Web 2.0?

  • “Web 2.0 is a shift from being a medium in which information was transmitted and consumed into being a platform in which content was created, shared, remixed, re purposed and passed along” (Thompson 2).
  • "Net generation students arrive at their universities as experienced multi-taskers, accustomed to using text messaging, telephones and email while searching the internet and watching television. They are ready for multimedia learning” (Thompson 3).
  • “To move our educational practices forward, we need an understanding of our users and their changing behavior, a willingness to experiment with new models and an appreciation of hybrid organizations that take advantage of skills contributed by various players with diverse backgrounds. It will not be easy, but the next generation will create models of scholarly publishing and learning, regardless of whether we choose to participate. The only question will be what role we carve out for ourselves” (Thompson 4).
  • “People are using new technologies to look at problems in many different ways: to make new connections and form relationships between disparate, sometimes apparently contradictory pieces of information and ultimately to create something new that can be shared with others. All that is reminiscent of current approaches to learning, including student-centered and active learning models that encourage students to solve meaningful problems and reflect on their thinking process. The challenge that we now face is figuring out how to incorporate the paradigm-altering technologies of Web 2.0 into teaching and learning” (Maloney 3).
